Mama Africa

After sending our DNA sample to National Geographic's Genographic Project, I found out that, based on our Y-chromosome lab analysis, my body carries a true African blood.

But why Y-chromosome? It is something which is passed directly from father to son, unchanged, from generation to generation.

Kei First Flight

Gosh, such a bad mommy I am, I haven't written anything on Kei ever since he was born! True enough, parents dedicate a lot of resources to keep the memory of the first kid, but the resources are dwindling for the second kid and beyond. As I am the fourth kid, I really understand this, because I couldn't find any pictures or mementos related to my infancy and childhood. Sorry I digress. But with the hectic schedule of taking care two kids, I just realized that Kei didn't have as many mementos as Noe had. C'mon, I gotta be fair to both of my kids. So, now I write something about Kei's progress during the past four months.

So far, the only thing that I have written is how breastfeeding Kei has been smooth sailing. Now I will try to add more news.

Tagged with 123 meme

Sorry Mr. Ong, for responding so-very-late to your 123 meme, Indrani have been occupied with things, sick kids, and flying back and forth Singapore-Jakarta. With easter holiday in the horizon, we just found the time to write again.

Indi hasn't been reading books lately, too busy with work, so that leaves me responding to the meme. The meme rules are:

  • look up page 123 in the book that is nearest to you at this very minute
  • look for the fifth sentence
  • then post the three sentences that follow that fifth sentence on page 123.

Here goes:

This Guy For Jakarta

We need Jaime Lerner as governor of Jakarta. Below is his presentation at TED, and he came across as a very down to earth person. His presentation is concise, simple, but profound.

Some of my favorite quotes:
- To fix a city, we have to start from teaching the children because they will teach the parents.
- Creativity happens when you cut one zero from the budget.
- We have to work fast because we don't have the whole time to plan. We can't have all the answer. It's important to just start, and contribution from the people is important, because they could teach you when you're not in the right track.

And he sings too, at the end of the presentation.
It's possible, it's possible, you can do it, you can do it!

What Is Your Earliest Memory?

I am trying to remember what is the earliest event in my life that I remember. Sure enough, I don't really remember myself being a baby in a diaper. But there are some remnants of memory in my brain that, I'm sure, happened before I was five years old. Some events even happened before I was three year old because I could remember them, even graphically, mainly because of a significant time marker in those events. Those events are as follows:

Tracking My Time

I've been tracking my time for the past few months. I'm able to do this perhaps because I'm just a housewife with plenty of spare time(Yeah right, the truth is, being a mom is a 24hr job!). Let me share with you about it.

In the beginning...

The Greatest Invention: Banana Guard

My neighbor Ioana Vaetoru-Fox bought me a Banana Guard from New Zealand. It's hard. It's big. It's almost manly!

I used to hate bringing a banana in my bag because it would end up looking like Gerber's mashed banana (literally!).

But this time it's different. I can confidently bring a banana in my bag to work, or anywhere else for that matter. I am tempted to carry it in my hand. It feels good. But, what would people say if I keep holding on to this thing? :)

When Did I Learn to Read?

Now that Noe is having full day activities at Carpe Diem, we noticed that they have already taught him basic alphabet recognition. Sometimes he would point at similar letters that appear in public domain and say "Same... same" (referring to the letters "N" that appear at different places).

What's next? Is he going to learn how to read at age 3? Is he going to start writing at age 4?

Wawancara: Radio Singapore International
